How Laser Marking Works
A laser marking machine focuses a beam to a fine spot and steers it across the part with two fast mirrors. Where the beam lands, the surface changes — it darkens, foams, anneals or is etched. Nothing touches the part, and nothing is added, so the mark becomes part of the material itself.
Why the Mark Is Permanent
Because the change happens in the surface rather than on top of it, the mark shrugs off heat, solvents, abrasion and washdowns. That’s the whole reason regulated industries moved from ink and labels to laser.
What Decides the Result
Three settings do most of the work: pulse energy, scan speed and frequency. Material does the rest. The same machine can anneal stainless black or cut a deep mould ID, depending on how those numbers are set.
From File to Finished Part
- Load the part and set the focus distance for the lens.
- Import the mark file and set pulse, speed and frequency.
- Run a sample on scrap, check contrast, then save the recipe.
- Fix the jig for repeat positioning and start the batch.
- Scan the codes and log first-article approval.
Once a recipe is locked, the result is the same on part one and part ten thousand.
