Marking vs Engraving — Not the Same Thing
The words get used interchangeably, but they describe different results. Marking changes the surface — color, contrast or texture — while leaving the part flat. Engraving removes material to cut a recess you can feel with a fingernail.
When Marking Is Enough
For serial numbers, 2D codes, logos and most compliance marks, a surface mark is all you need, and it’s faster. Annealing and dark marking on metal fall here.
When You Need Engraving
Mould text, deep IDs, wear-resistant marks and parts that get refinished call for real depth — more passes, more power, and often a dynamic-focus head.
How to Decide
Look at how the part is read and handled. If a scanner or an eye needs contrast, mark it. If the mark must survive grinding or coating, engrave it. When a spec is ambiguous, sampling both lets the part decide.
