Laser vs the Alternatives

Inkjet, dot-peen, electrochemical etch and labels all still have their place. Knowing where laser wins — and where it doesn’t — keeps the buying decision honest.

Inkjet and Labels

Cheap to start and flexible, but the mark sits on top of the part. Heat, solvents and handling wear it away, and consumables never stop costing money.

Dot-Peen and Electrochemical

Dot-peen is rugged but slow and noisy, and it deforms the surface. Electrochemical etch is clean on flat metal but needs stencils and chemistry. Both struggle with fine 2D codes.

Where Laser Wins

When a mark must survive years, read reliably as a 2D code, and cost almost nothing to run once installed, laser is hard to beat. The trade is a higher upfront price, which a high-volume line pays back quickly.

Choosing for Your Line

Match the method to the part’s life and your volume. A simpler method sometimes fits — and a sample shows clearly when laser is the better call.
