How Depth Is Built

Depth in laser engraving comes from layered passes, not one heavy burst. The beam removes a thin amount each pass; repeat it and the recess grows. Raw wattage helps, but pass strategy and focus control do the real work.

Holding Focus as Depth Grows

As the cut deepens, the surface moves away from the focal point. A dynamic-focus (Z-axis) head re-focuses through the depth, keeping the spot sharp at the bottom of the recess. Without it, deep marks turn rough and slow.

Material and Time

Hard metals and moulds take more passes; softer materials cut faster. Quoting deep work honestly means quoting cycle time, because depth trades directly against speed.

How Deep Engraving Runs

  1. Set focus to the part surface and define the engraving layers.
  2. Run the first pass and measure material removal per pass.
  3. Enable dynamic focus so the spot stays sharp as depth increases.
  4. Repeat passes to target depth, checking wall quality.
  5. Confirm depth and cycle time on a sample before the batch.

Getting a Real Answer

Depth specs are easy to misjudge on paper. Send the part and the target depth, and a sample gives the cycle time you can plan around.
