Compared with sandblasting and dry-ice blasting, laser cleaning is the only one of the three that removes dirt without throwing anything at the surface. That single difference drives most of the trade-offs in substrate safety, waste and running cost. Here is how the three stack up.
How It Works
Sandblasting is fast and cheap to start. But it wears the substrate, eats a steady stream of media, and leaves spent grit and dust to clear and contain. It roughens the surface, which is sometimes wanted before coating and often not. Dry-ice blasting is gentler than grit. It leaves no extra waste, since the CO₂ turns straight to gas. But it still relies on impact, needs a constant pellet supply, and struggles with tightly bonded rust and heavy coatings. On the narrower question of laser cleaning vs dry ice blasting, the gap is smaller than against grit. Even so, laser still wins on supplies and on tightly bonded layers. Laser sits apart: non-contact, almost no supplies, very little waste, and fine control over how much it removes.
Applications & Use Cases
The honest picture is that each has a place. For aggressive profiling of robust steel, where you want a rough surface, blasting can make sense. For lifting CO₂-soluble dirt off equipment in place, dry-ice has a niche. But most precision and production work needs the opposite — protect the substrate, cut supplies, avoid waste. There, laser usually wins on total cost and result.
